12 Game of Thrones Characters You See in Every School - Which One Are You?




Everyone loves Game of Thrones! This fun blog post will share 12 characters from the popular show and the similarities to different teachers your see in every school:

1 - Ned Stark

You have seen more staff, curriculums and policy changes than anyone else. You have been around the block and know how things should be done. You are respected and good at your job even though you're not part of the SLT.

With the latest changes from the new regime (government,) you realise you are too proud to and honourable to subject the ones you love to this unnecessary and cruel rule of testing. Retirement is looming unless the new pressures get to you first.



2 - Drogo

Although the core subjects of English, Maths and Science aren't your strong point, when it comes to a subject like PE, there is no one as passionate.

Come rain or shine, whatever the weather you are outside leading by example. When it comes to a school competition, you are ready for the battle and take it seriously. Winning is everything! Despite your competitive side, you also have a soft and loving side and can make a belting brew.



3 - Daenerys

Despite starting your journey as a teacher with a teaching placement where you were under the guidance of a nightmare teacher, you have since blossomed into a great teacher.

You have the potential to go right to the top and be a headteacher. But first,  you want to get as much experience as possible. Therefore, you have pretty much been the coordinator in every subject.

You constantly look for guidance and help and see the value in working as a team. Because of this, you are able to control the scariest dragons (children) in the school.





4 - Jamie Lannister

The IT coordinator. 

People think you are full of it because you can turn a plug on/off at the mains. Others think you have a special skill set and have become respected as one of the best teachers in the school. 

However, when local building work meant the WiFi went down, your biggest asset was lost. You were distraught, felt like you couldn't continue. You appeared vulnerable and weak, yet you adapted to become a well-rounded teacher and do the best for your class.



5 - Joffrey

You haven't been around long but already you've jumped aboard the SLT train and heading for the top by any means necessary. 

Other staff may not see your ambition or mistake you for being ruthless, but honestly, you don't care. 

People may question your methods and the way you do things are different from what has been done before. Despite this, you get the job done and ultimately that's what matters.







6 - Arya Stark

You are fierce, independent and determined.

Your parent/s worked in education and you saw first hand the lack of work-life balance so are on a mission to change the profession.

You take on any new challenge and love to go on courses. Returning from the course, you want to change how everything is done in school no matter how it was done before. Even though this will ruffle a few feathers you're a trailblazer and don't care!

7 - Jon Snow


You teach with honour and integrity and do everything right.

You are reliable and always keep a promise. You do endless lunch time and after school clubs and seem to struggle to say 'no.'

The way you became a teacher is questionable and ambiguous with no one knowing whether you had a degree or not.  But you are quickly becoming a teacher that everyone respects, showing signs of being a great leader.

Despite the potential to be great, you feel isolated and question your ability. When an offer for a promotion comes from another school you turn it down as you are loyal to the school that gave you the opportunity and want to finish the job.




8 - Sansa Stark

As a younger teacher, you wanted to prove yourself and so decided to become the SENCO.

You didn't realise at the time how much time and effort this would take and how others would use and rely on you to arrange and attend meetings with outside agencies and filling in endless forms.

Through time in the role, you have adapted well and have learnt so much from the hardship of the role.  You are now a fantastic teacher who is tolerant and understanding of everyone, both pupils and staff.


9 - Tyrion Lannister

People are very surprised when you reveal you're a teacher. You don't look or act like a teacher and you know this. You are sarcastic and everyone notices with the witty comments you make in staff meetings.

Despite the sarcasm and wit, you get the job done and done well. You don't always follow policy and do things by the book but your class love you. When Ofsted visited and everyone panicked, doubted themselves, you were the one who stood up, took charge and inspired the other staff to victory!

10 - Cersei

No one is more protective of their class than you. You only want the best for them and this is reflected in your teaching.

Some do, however, believe you may go too far. You will go to any length to make sure your class are the best, fixing team point competitions.

The look on your face when your class don't win the attendance award is a picture. The midday assistants shake in fear if they have to tell you one of your class has misbehaved.




11 - Brienne of Tarth

Although you have all the qualities of an amazing teacher, as a TA, you're the best sidekick to have in the classroom. You will do anything for the teacher, endless photocopying, intervention groups even covering the class if needed.

You are intimidating in battle and no teacher wants to get on your wrong side. If a teacher is ever in a meeting with a feisty parent, you're right by the side of the teacher as a loyal and fierce companion.


12 - The Mountain

He isn't a teacher or TA but a valuable asset to the school.

If a job needs to be done that others wouldn't do, he is your man!

The caretaker builds, moves and fixes everything. He gets the job done by any means necessary and loves to get his hands dirty. Children, parents and even staff are scared of him and no one dares EVER step into his office!


So the question is... which one are you?

Are you an EdTech Jedi?

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of presenting at the Hull and East Riding IT conference. In my keynote, I discussed what Star Wars can teach use about effective use of EdTech in the classroom.


I thought I would share some of these ideas -


For teachers to make the most of technology in the classroom, they need to believe it can transform teaching and learning. This tends to happen once a teacher has seen how technology can help them as a teacher, how it can make their life easier by saving them time and improving their practice.


One of the biggest problems in getting teachers to utilise technology is the fear that it might not work, it might not go to plan. Teachers need to stop focusing on what might go wrong and focus on what can go right!


Learn from mistakes. Lessons don't always go to plan but reflect and evaluate and learn from it. Most teachers will look through my blog and think every lesson is fantastic but behind a really successful lesson will be a lesson that didn't work. I see a lot of schools who promote the growth mindset approach and so should be practising what they preach!


When things do go well, share it! Inspire others by sharing and celebrating good practice by blogging and tweeting about it. 


Don't be afraid to ask for help. This again is where social media can be so powerful. Using Twitter or Facebook allows you to join a global staffroom where you can ask questions, find resources, ideas and inspiration from amazing educators all over the world. 


Make sure there is a purpose behind using technology in class. Don't use it for the sake of it and don't fall for the gimmicks. Technology should always be used as a tool to enhance great teaching not substitute poor teaching. For me, technology starts transforming learning when children move from being consumers to creators!


Technology can support students and make them much more independent with their learning. Let them lead their learning with technology as the tool to let them create, demonstrate and share. I also love how this phrase in can be applied to the approach teachers should have towards using technology in the classroom. Trying to learn new things, using technology to find new ideas, tools and strategies to improve their teaching. Setting the example!



Have high expectations of what your students can achieve when given the opportunity to tinker and play. Far too often, we constrict children to follow instructions to accomplish a goal. Giving students the freedom to tinker with a new tech tool can lead to some deep and wonderful learning experiences. 


Don't fall into the trap of teaching to a test. This won't provide students with a positive learning experience, instead will turn children off. When technology is used effectively in the classroom, it can add meaning, purpose and make children care! One of my favourite phrases from John Murray - "Don't just teach the curriculum, teach the whole child."


Finally, give tech a go! Take a risk, try something new knowing it can enhance and enrich learning in the classroom.

The Art of Camouflage Learning - Friday 22nd April 2016 Manchester

Thanks to all that came to the conference on Friday. This was the first conference of this type and I had a great day sharing ideas around the art of camouflage learning.

Another weekend with Barnaby!

This weekend, Lily was ecstatic to have Barnaby come and stay! I have previously blogged about how we used technology to help Harry recount his weekend. I also did the same when Charlie brought him home. So it would only be fair to let Lily use technology to retell her adventures in a way she can't yet do on paper.

Lily used the app Adobe Voice to create a lovely digital story to recount the weekend. It is one of my favourite apps as it is very easy and straightforward to use and you finish with a professional and engaging video. This was her effort -

Delivering Writing in the Modern Classroom Conference - Gateshead 19th April

Today I delivered my joint conference with Alan Peat in the North East! It was a brilliant day with a great group of enthusiastic and passionate teachers! I hope everyone who attended enjoyed the day and found it valuable and will be returning to school with ideas to improve writing in class.

Facebook 360 Videos to Inspire Writing

You may have noticed a plethora of 360 degree videos popping up on facebook and Youtube. These videos are recorded with a camera system that simultaneously records all 360 degrees of a scene. Viewers can pan and rotate a 360 video's perspective to watch it from different angles.

I look the immersive element to these videos; being able to control what to focus on. I think they are also a great way to inspire writing in class. You can read about an example of this linked with Star Wars - Jedi Writing - Inspiring Writing Through Star Wars.


There are a couple of other 360 degree videos I have found on facebook that would be great to use in the classroom. I thought I would share to hopefully inspire others to use them in class -

There are also some great 360 videos on YouTube including this one from Curiscope where you can swim with great white sharks!


Ideally, you want students to explore the 360 degree video to get the immersive experience, unfortunately, many schools block facebook and Youtube. One way around this would be to record a video of a teacher exploring the 360 degree video. To do this, I use the screen record feature in Airserver -

The SATs pack from @SparkyTeaching

I am sure many of us will be planning and preparing for the upcoming SATs tests. While I am not in favour of the tests, I know ultimately children have to sit them and therefore teachers all over the country will be prepping their students to pass. One resource I love is the SATs pack from @SparkyTeaching. They seem to echo my thoughts on the tests and so the pack tries to make the preparations more engaging and fun. This video sums it up -


The following link will give you all the information about the pack including some free resources such as a video to share with your class and a letter for parents. THE SATs PACK from @SparkyTeaching.

The pack is priced at £37.99 and includes a range of ideas and resources supporting both English and Maths. There is also the Shine pack included which was designed to show your students that they are more than the sum of their test scores. It includes loads of resources and posters for you to use in class, for example - 




It is a fantastic resource which will hopefully build children's confidence and make their SATs experience less stressful and more enjoyable!

Travel back in time with Virtual Reality!

Virtual Reality is getting more and more popular. Having used Google Cardboard in the classroom for the past year, it never surprises me how immersed and engaged children can are when exploring different environments straight from the classroom.

The Google Expeditions project looks like it will take Virtual Reality to the next level in the classroom -

We turned Year 3 into Deep Sea Divers -


Year 5 explored Virtual Jurassic World



There are a variety of virtual reality apps available on the app store, plenty of which have a 2D option so the app can be viewed on an iPad if you don't have enough headsets and devices. A couple I have stumbled across have come from the brilliant team over at Computeam.

Trench Experience VR
Both these apps allow you to immerse yourself and travel back in time to explore an ancient Iron Age roundhouse and First World War trench. These would link perfectly with certain topics in the classroom and will surely inspire writing as children will have a fully immersive, multisensory experience. 

Unfortunately, these apps can ONLY be viewed with a VR headset, I would love the option to view in 2D so children can use these apps on the iPad too.

There are plenty of music creation apps on the iPads and one of my new favourites is Incredibox! I have been a fan of the website for a while and the app allows you to play version 2 'Little Miss.'

There are plenty of ways in which this app can be used in the classroom, just allowing children to tinker, play and try to create their own song would be the first but looking at patterns, sequences and making links to computing skills.

I would also be looking at using this app for children to create some background music when performing a text as a podcast or radio show. Here is an example using the Audioboom app where children have used a similar app to create music to accompany their performance.
